In 1994, Kathleen Joyce was hired as a writer for the College of Engineering & Computer Science. Within a few months, the Dean of the College asked, “How would you like to work with high school students and help us with recruiting?” Without hesitation, Kathleen eagerly accepted the invitation, an opportunity that has allowed her to meet and connect with hundreds (perhaps thousands) of prospective students and their families in her career, and to recruit great engineering and computer science talent to Syracuse University.
Born in New York City and growing up in Dumont, New Jersey, Kathleen earned her B.S. from the College of Arts & Sciences at SU, and a M.S. in Higher Education/Student Affairs Administration. Serving as Assistant Dean for Student Recruitment since 2008, Kathleen has responsibility for both undergraduate and graduate recruiting for the College. Among her many accomplishments, she established the first Women’s Overnight event for prospective female students in E&CS, an event which has become a beloved tradition in the College among prospective and current students, and alumni. She travels extensively in support of recruitment, proudly waving her big Orange flag, and building strong connections across the USA and around the globe.
Kathleen is advisor to the Alpha Omega Epsilon professional engineering sorority. She is also coordinator of the National Council for Women in Technology (NCWIT) Upstate New York Aspirations in Computing affiliate and is a planning committee member for NYCWiC. She is an honorary member of the Golden Key honor society, serves a treasured of the Central New York Fulbright Association chapter, and is vice president of the SU chapter of Phi Beta Delta, the international honor society. She is also a member of the NYS Two-Year Engineering Science Association. She has completed her coursework and is now working on her dissertation for a Ph.D. in Higher Education.
The first in her family to attend College, and a diehard Syracuse fan, one of the happiest moments ever for Kathleen was when she was honored in a Daily Orange feature, “Who is Syracuse,” (http://dailyorange.com/2014/04/kathleen-joyce-assistant-dean-excites-students-for-future-at-su-life-after-graduation/), a special series highlighting individuals who embody the spirit of Syracuse University.
