Civil & Environmental Engineering

Degrees:

  • Ph.D. Civil Engineering, University of Minnesota, 2012
  • M.S. Environmental Science and Engineering, Singapore Stanford Partnership, 2007
  • B.S. Environmental Science, Tongji University, 2006

Research Interests:

  • Occurrence and fate of organic contaminants
  • Formation and control of disinfection byproducts
  • Public health implications of water reuse
  • Environmental impacts of energy production

Current Research:

Our group combines controlled laboratory experiments with field work to study chemical processes occurring across diverse natural and engineered aquatic environments. Our recent work focuses on: (1) assessing transformation processes of organic contaminants and their interactions with dissolved and particulate constituents in natural waters and (2) characterizing sources of harmful byproducts to minimize their formation during drinking water purification and wastewater recycling. Our goal is to promote water sustainability while protecting public health.

Teaching Interests:

  • Aquatic chemistry
  • Water quality analysis
  • Environmental organic chemistry
  • Physical and chemical treatment processes
