Dr. Sinéad C. Mac Namara has been named Associate Dean for Student Affairs in the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

“I really appreciate the trust that the Dean, and the search committee and the staff are putting in me to take on this role. I’m really excited for the challenge,” said Mac Namara.

In her new role, Mac Namara will be a crucial point person for academics, recruitment and student engagement.

“I’m definitely excited to have more interaction with engineering students,” said Mac Namara. “Hopefully in the four years they’re with us, they get the skills that allow them to do well, but they also get an understanding of how they learn and how they can be successful.”

Her continuing experience as an Associate Professor of structural engineering in both the College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the School of Architecture gives her a unique perspective going into this new position.

“I think my experience in the two departments has allowed me to see a big picture of the field of engineering,” said Mac Namara. “How it’s viewed both from the inside and from the outside, and how the professions work, and what kind of skills and talents you need alongside your technical abilities to be a successful engineer.”

Dr. Mac Namara joined Syracuse University in 2006 and received a Ph.D. from Princeton University in 2007. Since that time, she has become a world-renowned scholar and educator. Her research explores shell structures, structural art, innovation and creativity in engineering education, and collaboration among engineers and architects. She has been recognized for her teaching with an ASEE Outstanding Teaching Award in 2013, and a Meredith Teaching Recognition Award in 2011. She co-authored the book Collaborations in Architecture and Engineering, Routledge 2014 (with Clare Olsen). Additionally, her design and built work with students and colleagues has been recognized by the American Institute of Architects and the American Collegiate Schools of Architecture.

Dr. Mac Namara has become part of an assembly of enthusiastic leaders primed to guide engineering and computer science at Syracuse University. “I’m intrigued to see what we as a team can do to further the college’s mission of providing an excellent engineering education,” said Mac Namara.

“Even in midst of a challenging time, it was critical to elevate Sinéad to fill an essential role focused on helping all of our students receive an outstanding education and experience,” said Dean J. Cole Smith. “Dr. Mac Namara’s presence immediately fortifies our leadership. Her knowledge, versatility, and dedication will considerably strengthen the college long-term.”
